Adoption offers pour in for abandoned dogs in New Westminster

Offers of financial support and calls to adopt have poured in since a dozen dogs were abandoned in cages at the New Westminster Animal Shelter in the middle of the night last Friday.

Offers of financial support and calls to adopt have poured in since a dozen dogs were abandoned in cages at the New Westminster Animal Shelter in the middle of the night last Friday.

Sukh Maghera, coordinator for parking and animal services, said the shelter has been flooded with calls since the news of the unusual situation was first reported Friday.

"We're getting a lot of help, and we really appreciate it," Maghera said. "(We are getting) a lot of calls, a lot of emails, a lot of support."

The shelter is finishing up on the vaccinations and getting health checks completed and hopes to have the pups - mostly terrier-and Chihuahua-type smaller dogs - fostered or adopted by today and all through this week.

The 12 dogs were found outside the New Westminster shelter at 4 a.m. by a security guard. Another 38 dogs were dropped off about 20 kilometres away at a shelter in Richmond.

According to reports, RCMP are looking into the situation in Richmond. Maghera said they have also filed a report with the New Westminster Police Department.

Maghera said he doesn't know if the dogs were from a puppy mill.

"We are still investigating," he explained, adding that most of the dogs seem healthy and social.

"They will be good for fostering and adopting. If they weren't, then we wouldn't be able to do that. So, so far, so good," he said.

The shelter has never had this many dogs dropped off at one time, according to Maghera. The unusual situation garnered a great deal of media attention over the weekend.
