The dollar store boom continues in New West with the opening of yet-another discount chain.
Dollar Tree Canada is celebrating the grand opening of its New Westminster store on July 9. The 8,529square-foot store is located at 800 Carnarvon St. and will employ about 15 people.
"Dollar Tree Canada continues to grow," Joe Calvano, president of Dollar Tree Canada, said in a media release. "We are proud to bring Canada's only single price-point retailer to the New Westminster community."
The store, which sells items for $1.25 or less, will offer summer toys, barbecue essentials and everyday basics.
Dollar Tree is a Fortune 500 Company, headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia and operates more than 4,400 stores across 48 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces.
Some local residents have expressed concern about the growing number of dollar stores in the city.
Jen Arbo, operations manager for the Royal City Farmers Market, told The Record recently that she believes there are too many dollar stores in the city and there needs to be a more diverse mix of businesses. She also thinks residents should support local businesses rather than opt for cheap products that are made overseas and sold by big corporations.
