Concrete action: A 36-hour concrete pour is coming up as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

A day-and-a-half concrete pour could impact traffic in downtown New West this week.

As part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project, crews are embarking on a 36-hour continuous concrete pour near New Westminster’s’ shoreline on Tuesday. Starting at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, Fraser Crossing Partners will begin setting up to perform a continuous 36-hour concrete pour to complete the pile cap for the in-river bridge foundation.

“It is important for the pour to be continuous to ensure structural integrity,” said an update from the project team.

According to Fraser Crossing Partners, the 36-hour continuous pour starts at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27. Crews will begin setting up for the pour at 5 a.m.

“Nearby residents may hear noise from concrete trucks and heavy equipment while work is underway,” said the notice. “Concrete trucks will access the foundation throughout the duration of the pour using the temporary access platform from the New Westminster shoreline south of Front Street.”

While this work is underway, single-lane alternating traffic will be in effect on Front Street and traffic control personnel will be on site to assist concrete trucks accessing the work area.

Once the concrete pour is complete and the concrete has cured, crews will begin work on the pier columns, stated the update.

The new $1.377-billion crossing of the Fraser River will replace the Pattullo Bridge, which was built in 1937. The new bridge is expected to open sometime in 2024.
