The New Westminster school district may be more than $2 million in the hole, but its top administrators are still making a pretty penny.
The district released its statement of financial information this week and it shows 23 employees are making more than $100,000 annually and 209 employees are making more than $75,000 annually.
Topping the list is superintendent John Woudzia, who made $159,268 and also had $6,162 in expenses.
Second is secretary-treasurer Brian Sommerfeldt, who earned $137,602 and had expenses of $4,194, followed in third place by assistant superintentendent Al Balanuik, who earned $134,002, with expenses of $11,762.
New Westminster Secondary School principal Mary Bushman was next at $124,372, with expenses of $160, followed by director of instruction, Sandra Pace, at $119,837 and expenses of $7,236.
Rounding out the top 10 were: director of instruction Janet Grant at $118,403 and expenses of $3,193; district principal Phil Cookson at $114,194 and expenses of $1,146; Lord Tweedsmuir principal Patty Farris at $112,166 and expenses of $62; Glenbrook Middle School principal Marlene Jack at $112,166 and expenses of $136; and Queensborough Middle School principal Debbie Jones at $111,683 and expenses of $160.
The other 13 members of the New Westminster school district's $100,000 club were: Richard McBride principal Jacob Sol at $108,317 and expenses of $1,092; Connaught Heights principal Chris Evans at $107,524 and expenses of $159; NWSS vice-principal Kelly Boechler at $107,524 and expenses of $118; Hume Park and F.W. Howay principal Ken Millard at $107,524 and expenses of $262; NWSS vice-principal Laura Howell at $107,409 and expenses of $42; Herbert Spencer principal Tracy Fulton at $107,409 and expenses of $53; NWSS vice-principal Rhonda Anderson at $107,409 and no expenses; John Robson principal Karen Catherwood at $107,409 and $60 in expenses; NWSS vice-principal Stephen Inniss at $107,409 and $812 in expenses; Queen Elizabeth principal Jamie Sadler at $106,927 and $559 in expenses; Lord Kelvin principal Daljeet Rama at $106,927 and $171 in expenses; Doug Templeton, director of maintenance and operations at $106,742 and $6,503 in expenses; and Diane Halkett, district administrator for student services at $100,518 and $479 in expenses.
In total, the 209 employees making more than $75,000 annually account for 37.5 per cent of the almost $48 million in salaries paid out in the district.
One household that makes more than $100,000 total from the New Westminster school district is the Ewen household, where school trustee Michael Ewen pocketed $23,658 and $3,580 in expenses and wife Leanne, a teacher at Queen Elizabeth, took home $84,160. Michael Ewen is also a teacher in the Surrey school district.
