New West firefighter tops in a Starlight Casino's charity poker tourney

Around Town: A New Westminster firefighter, a pickleball pro and a former professional poker were Top 3 in a charity poker tournament

Three charities were the big winners in a recent poker tournament at Starlight Casino.

In celebration of the new poker room at the Starlight Casino New Westminster, Gateway Casinos and Entertainment hosted a charity poker tournament at the Queensborough casino on Oct. 12.

Participants, including Mayor Patrick Johnstone, Coun. Ruby Campbell, athletes and actors, were invited to play in support of a charity of their choice.

"Our celebrity charity poker tournament was an evening of community, camaraderie, and good fun," said Vu Lam, casino manager of Starlight Casino. "The poker tournament celebrated the launch of our brand-new poker room, and there definitely was some friendly competition amongst the guests, all to the benefit of our local charitable organizations. It's an event we want to see grow and we're looking forward to the next one."

Mike Cameron, a New Westminster firefighter, took the top prize in the charity tournament. He chose to donate his $1,500 to the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society.

Steve Deakin, a professional pickleball player, placed second. He donated his $1,000 to Last Door Recovery.

Matt Jarvis – a former professional poker player – placed third. He chose to donate his $500 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
