Young or young-at-heart - there's something for you this weekend in New Westminster. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the Oct. 4 to 6 weekend.
1. Celebrate Fire Prevention Week at the annual Glenbrooke fire hall open house that's taking place on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. New Westminster and Fire Rescue Services is hosting the event that features demonstrations, displays by first responders and community safety agencies, a visit from Sparky the fire dog and a barbecue put on by the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society. The Glenbrooke fire hall is located at 1 East Sixth Ave., next to Canada Games Pool.
2. Get entertained and educated at the Seniors Festival that's taking place at Century House on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day's fun includes presentations by the Century House Singers, Ralph Shaw (king of the ukulele), youth artist Tara Stevens and roving magician Rod Boss. African dance and hula hooping classes, presentations about local services for seniors, brain fitness, pensions and retirement and workshops on topics such as standup comedy, laughter yoga and Facebook are all part of the day's fun. Century House is located at 835 Eighth St.
3. Enjoy an afternoon of fun when seniors take to the stage at the Seniors Have Talent show at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall. The talent show features an eclectic mix of performers including a woman who dances with her dog and an 88-year-old Elvis impersonator. The show, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m., is a fundraiser for the Sapperton Pensioners and the New Westminster Lions Club. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and free for children aged five and under, and are available at www.newwestminsterlionsclub.org or call the Sapperton Pensioners Hall at 604-522-0280.
4. Support Royal Columbian Hospital at a pub night at the Paddlewheeler Pub at River Market. The event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight and features 50/50 draws, live entertainment and more. Tickets are $20 (with $10 going to the hospital foundation) and includes a burger and a beer, wine or high-ball. For tickets, go to www.paddlewheelerforrch.eventbrite.ca.
5. Check out the Vagabond Players' latest presentation, Let's Murder Marsha, which takes to the stage at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen's Park. The play, which runs Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., is on until Oct. 26. Tickets are $15 or $13 for seniors and students.
