The West Coast Symphony is opening its 2013/14 season with concerts in New Westminster and Vancouver.

The symphony is first up in this year's Music at Queens concert series, bringing its season opening concert to Queens Avenue United Church on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The orchestra is under the baton of maestro Bujar Llapaj, and the concert features guest soloist David Gillham.

Gillham, who was described by All Music Guide Magazine as a "violinist with a lean tone, a supple technique and an amazing talent for sustaining a long line," will be performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.

Gillham is a member of the UBC School of Music faculty and pursues a career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher.

Also on the program will be Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and Wagner's Overture to The Flying Dutchman.

The New Westminster concert is set to start at 7:30 p.m., and the church is at 529 Queens Ave.

The concert also runs in Vancouver on Friday, Oct. 4, 8 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard St.

Admission is by donation.
