You're invited to delve into the world of poetic memoir and photo journalling at a Feb. 25 workshop offered by the Royal City Literary Arts Society.

Have you heard of photo journalling?

The Royal City Literary Arts Society is inviting folks from New Westminster and beyond to find out more about the art form in a workshop coming up in February.

Cynthia Sharp leads the Poetic Memoir and Photo Journalling workshop on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Zoom.

What's the photo journalling workshop all about?

You’ll enjoy an hour-and-a-half of “contemplation, cutting, pasting and art making,” as a course write-up says, in a workshop that explores documentary and mixed-media poetry.

You can use personal pictures or provided images to guide you in telling your story through a photo memoir.

You’ll be led through a look at samples of photo journalling from poetry memoir such as Victoria Chang’s Dear Memory, discussing how image and text work together to create different layers of experience for the reader/viewer than either would on its own.

Then, you’ll sit down to create your own poetic visuals.

What do you need to bring?

Have glue or tape, paper and a pen, pencil, coloured pencils or markers and printed copies of one to three photos you would like to journal to (and cut and paste onto), or print out one to three of the provided images from the public domain

How do you sign up or find out more?

The workshop is free for RCLAS members and $15 for non-members. Register by email (secretary@rclas.com) and pay online.
