The Diviners onstage at Douglas College

A water diviner who fears water. A preacher who won’t preach. A community of worshippers without a leader. Their respective struggles culminate in tragedy in The Diviners. The play, by Jim Leonard, is onstage Nov. 10 to 18 at the Laura C.

A water diviner who fears water is at the heart of The Diviners, onstage at Douglas College in November.

A water diviner who fears water. A preacher who won’t preach. A community of worshippers without a leader. Their respective struggles culminate in tragedy in The Diviners.

The play, by Jim Leonard, is onstage Nov. 10 to 18 at the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre.

It’s being presented by the departments of theatre, and stagecraft and event technology.

The Diviners, set during the Great Depression in small-town Indiana, follows the growing friendship between Buddy, a local boy who has brain damage, and C.C. Showers, a stranger who comes to town looking for work. The two connect through their struggles: Buddy has an uncanny ability to divine water but is so terrified of water that he won’t even bathe, child C.C. is a preacher who has lost his faith and won’t preach.

“It’s a beautiful, rustic story that portrays its characters’ struggles in a thoughtful, authentic way,” says Deborah Neville, director and Douglas College theatre instructor, in a press release. “This is theatre at its best, using the stage to explore human nature in a way that gives the audience a new perspective and leaves them with something to think about at the end.”

The student cast includes New Westminster resident Nelson Ellis, along with Marina Cindrich, Dayna Hoffman, Emma Davis, Kobe Doi, Dani Break, Dahlia Kerr, Alex van Geyn, Emily Thorne and Christian Krushel.

The Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre is on the fourth floor north at Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave. Tickets are $20 general admission, or $10 for seniors, students, matinees and Talkback Tuesdays.
