Film fans in New Westminster, be sure to mark March 28 on your calendar.

That’s the date for the next Last Monday at the Movies outing at Massey Theatre – and this month’s feature is The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.

The film follows Áila (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), who stops to console a young woman she finds barefoot and sobbing in the streets. It turns out the young woman, Rosie (Violet Nelson) has just escaped an assault by her boyfriend. Áila takes Rosie into her home, and the narrative unfolds in real time as they come to grips with what has happened.

The movie takes its title from an essay by Indigenous poet Billy-Ray Belcourt and was based on a watershed moment in Tailfeathers’ own life.

Tailfeathers, a member of the Kainai First Nation as well as Sámi from Norway, triples as lead, co-writer and co-director, sharing writing and directing credits with Kathleen Hepburn.

The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open screens Monday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at Massey Theatre.

Tickets for all showings in the Arts Council of New Westminster film series are $9 general admission, or $8 for students and seniors. You can buy in advance online or pay cash at the door.
