Summer 2022: Live music, arts abound in New Westminster

Mark your calendars for these concerts, markets and festivals coming your way.

Performers offer up live music for folks enjoying a past Fridays on Front event. The arts council will present a concert series in conjunction with the popular outdoor block party series again this summer.

New Westminster will be buzzing with arts, entertainment and cultural activities this summer.

The Arts Council of New Westminster has a jam-packed schedule of events planned for July and August, and people of all ages are invited to join in.

“We are so thrilled to be back, and 2022 is shaping up to be a great year for showcasing all the amazing talent New Westminster has to offer,” an arts council press release says.

Look for live music, art exhibitions, craft markets and more.

The arts council also welcomes volunteers to help out at events throughout the summer. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can sign up on the website or call 604-525-3244 for more information.

Here are some summer highlights for 2022:

July 2022: Arts Council of New Westminster events

● Sherida Charles: Transits and Reveries: Art exhibition runs July 1 to 31 at The Gallery at Queen’s Park, with opening reception on Wednesday, July 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.

● New West Craft: The artisan market runs first and third Saturdays of the month, July 2 and 16, at River Market, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

● New West Craft Summer Night Market: Stroll the boardwalk at River Market on Saturday, July 2 for the return of the popular night market from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

● Monday Music in the Park: Enjoy live music by the totem pole outside Centennial Lodge on Monday evenings, July 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 6 to 8 p.m.

● Queen’s Park Art Festival: The brand-new Queen’s Park Arts Festival is set to run from July 6 to 10.  You can enjoy live music, swing dance, poetry, new media, outdoor theatre, kids’ arts and more at various times, all centred on the Queen’s Park bandshell and farm. 

● Moody Park Daytime Series: Enjoy arts at Moody Park on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m., July 7, 14, 21 and 28.

● Queen’s Park Concert Series: Catch concerts in the park on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., with shows on July 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28 and 31.

● Fridays on Front: The arts council will offer up a concert series as part of the Fridays on Front fun, running 5 to 8 p.m. on July 8, 15, 22 and 29.

● On Your Block: Swing by Tipperary Park on Saturday, July 9 to join the fun between 1 and 9 p.m.

● Poetry in the Park: Experience poetry at the Queen’s Park bandshell every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with sessions on July 6, 13, 20 and 27.

● Gordon and Richard in the Lodge:  Join in the fun on Wednesday, July 27. Doors at 8 p.m.

August 2022

● Monday Music in the Park: Enjoy live music by the totem pole outside Centennial Lodge on Monday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

● Summer Sketching by the River: Drop in to try out your sketching skills on Tuesdays, outside River Market, with sessions for teens from 2 to 4 p.m. and general sessions from 6 to 8 p.m.  It runs Aug 2, 9, 16 and 23.

● Jeongmin Ahn: Trash: Catch the new art exhibition at the Gallery at Queen’s Park from Aug 3 to 28.

● Poetry in the Park: Experience poetry at the Queen’s Park bandshell every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Aug 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

● Moody Park Daytime Series: Enjoy arts in Moody Park on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m., Aug 4, 11, 18 and 25.

● Queen’s Park Concert Series: Catch concerts in the park on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., with shows on Aug 4, 7, 11, 14, 18 and 21.

● Fridays on Front: The arts council will offer up a concert series as part of the Fridays on Front fun, running 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug 5, 12 and 19.

● New West Craft: The artisan market runs first and third Saturdays of the month, Aug. 6 and 20, at River Market, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

● Gordon and Richard in the Lodge: Join in the fun on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Doors at 8 p.m.
