New Westminster has been hitting all the right notes lately.

Hot on the heels of a spectacular two-week run of Annie by Royal City Musical Theatre Company, followed by the popular LitFest New West, comes another artistic occasion for the books: the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra's Mother's Day concert.

It's set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11 at the Massey Theatre.

The concert stars the up-and-coming young cellist Tate Zawadiuk, a New Westminster-born musician who has already shared the stage with some top musicians. He has had performances with groups including the Vancouver  Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vancouver Youth Orchestra.

On Sunday, May11, concertgoers will be treated to Tate's performance of Dvorak's majestic concerto for cello.

"This work showcases the composer's flair for infectious melody and his ability to orchestrate with vivid colour and nuance," said local arts promoter Tony Antonias.

Antonias predicts that Tate - the principal cellist of the Vancouver Youth Orchestra - will earn accolades for his performance of the cello concerto, one of the most popular ever written for the instrument.

The Mother's Day performance also features Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 in G Major, along with the overture to Idomeneo by Mozart.

The orchestra is under the baton of maestro Jin Zhang.

Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave. Admission is by donation.
