Beauty meets function in work by ceramic artist Hitomi McKenzie.
The New Westminster artist has a new show, Communication of Beauty and Function, opening March 24 at the Atrium Gallery at Place des Arts. An opening reception is being held Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m., and the show continues to April 22.
The show includes a variety of porcelain ceramic work.
“After successfully throwing a piece, Hitomi’s method of creating ceramic art involves dissecting and distorting the shapes in an innovative way of making and producing original designs,” a press release explains. “The throwing rings on each piece are exaggerated to give the impression of fold fabric, and a shiny transparent glaze gives a highly polished finish, making it a very practical product.”
You can find out more about MacKenzie at www.hitomimckenzie.com.
Two other exhibitions will also open at the same time: Whisperings …, featuring the fibre art of Anni Hunt and Catherine Nicholls, in the Leonore Peyton Salon; and Codex Pacificus, featuring photography by Laara Cerman, in the Mezzanine Gallery.
Place des Arts is at 1120 Brunette Ave. in Coquitlam. See www.placedesarts.ca for more on the exhibition.
