The bluegrass musical follows the story of the Singing Sanders Family as they end a five-year hiatus to bring their “newfangled” bluegrass sound to North Carolina’s Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

It’s 1938, and the Great Depression is on its way out, but the residents of the small town are still feeling the hit – but the pastor is determined to bring his congregation into the modern era.

The performers will sing and accompany themselves on instruments.

“It’s like the Rankin family touring churches,” says director Sarah Rodgers. “I love bluegrass and the sweet charm of the travelling musical family.”

Smoke on the Mountain is a guest production of the Midnight Theatre Collective.

Smoke on the Mountain is onstage Oct. 9 to Nov. 1 at Pacific Theatre, 1440 West 12th Ave. in Vancouver.

Tickets run from $22.99 to $29.99. See www.pacifictheatre.org or call 604-731-5518 for info and tickets.
