New West 7 featured at Van Dop Gallery for Cultural Crawl

Seven prominent New Westminster artists are featured in a new exhibition at Van Dop Gallery.

The gallery is featuring the New West 7 for the annual New Westminster Cultural Crawl.

The group of artist is curated by Trudy Van Dop, owner of the gallery, and takes its name from the original Group of Seven. All the artists are local and have achieved international acclaim.

The seven are:

  • Gabor Gasztonyi, a photographer known for his intimate portraits and most recognized for his 2010 photography book A Room in the City, featuring portraits of residents of the Downtown Eastside;
  • Jerry McLaughlin, a painter whose career in visual arts spans more than two decades and whose work has been internationally exhibited and is in collections in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England and Germany;
  • Leslie Poole, one of Canada’s most exhibited artists, with more than 100 solo exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. during a 40-plus-year career;
  • Lanta Meng, a painter who shares her home studio with her photographer husband, Rodrigo Sarrat-Cave (also a New West 7 member), who combines a background in traditional Asian art from her early years in Taiwan with contemporary training at Emily Carr University;
  • Rodrigo Sarrat-Cave, husband of Meng, who uses digital image-making to fragment the real world with the camera and reconstruct it with digital tools;
  • Jim Walsh, who paints under the alias J. Charles, a photographer, painter and teacher whose work has been exhibited across Canada and the U.S.;
  • J.G. Freedman, an internationally juried artist with an extensive exhibition history, whose work can be found in collections throughout North America.

The New West 7 exhibition will be open for the Cultural Crawl on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Viewings can also be arranged at other times by calling 604-521-7887.
