What does Vancouver’s development boom mean for the city’s future?
Artist Stanley Mishkin is asking that question in a new exhibition, City-Seen: an unheralded look at development, running from March 1 to 31 at the Plaskett Gallery.
An opening reception is set for Thursday, March 9 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition includes oil paintings that depict the changing face of Vancouver through images of demolition and construction.
“The picture postcard of Vancouver is portrayed as a 21st-century city set against the background of the scenic Coast Mountains,” Mishkin writes in an artist statement. “Stroll amid the canyons of the downtown office and condominium towers and there are but fleeting glimpses of this mountain vista so prized among its inhabitants.”
Mishkin’s work looks what he terms the “uniform greyness” of the concrete, glass and steel that make up the developing downtown. His work looks specifically at condominium development.
“In my paintings there are scenes of demolition and construction which I hope will stimulate thought about the unfettered boom in Vancouver’s development,” he says.
The Plaskett Gallery is at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., plus during productions at the theatre (and one hour before all showtimes). See www.masseytheatre.com or call 604-517-5900.
