Then get them signed up for the Vivo Children’s Choir. The New West-based choir is getting set to launch its 2016/17 season, and early registration pricing is underway until Aug. 31.

The non-auditioned choir for kids aged seven and up introduces young singers to music in a variety of languages and styles, from folk to gospel and contemporary songs.

The choir meets Wednesdays starting Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church. For all the details or to register, see www.vivochildrenschoir.ca or email [email protected].

 

KIDS' ART OFFERINGS ABOUND

And speaking of small folks … If you’re looking to get your kids involved in something artistic for the fall season, then be sure to pick up a copy of the city’s new Active Living Guide.

The city’s is offering up a variety of art, dance and music classes for everyone from the very youngest on up – including Art Splash and StART classes for two- to four-year-olds at Anvil Centre, and parent and tot art and pottery classes at Centennial Community Centre. You can also find pre-dance, ballet, music shakers, Highland dance and more for the small set.

And, of course, older kids have a host of offerings to choose from – check out Zine Making, Little Van Goghs, hip hop, street jazz, Adventures in Drama and much, much more.

NEW ART EXHIBITION OPENING

Art lovers, be sure to take a stroll along 12th Street to check out a new exhibition at the Gabor Gasztonyi Studio Gallery.

The gallery is hosting favourite things, an exhibition of work by members of the New West Artists group. Featured artists include Brenda Fairfax, Ashley Rose Goentoro, Alicja Draganska, Eileen Pick, Janet Kvammen, Tiffany Leigh Prince, Carol Rose, Elena Zhukova, Julia Schoennagel and Betteanne Wilson.

An opening reception is set for Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m., and the exhibition is on until Saturday, Sept. 24. The gallery is open Thursday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

SING ALONG AT MUSICAL FUNDRAISER

If you’re the kind of person who just can’t keep your mouth shut while watching musicals, this one’s most definitely for you.

Royal City Musical Theatre and the Arts Council of New Westminster are offering up a special fundraising screening of The Sound of Music this fall – and it’s the sing-along edition.

The classic Julie Andrews-Christopher Plummer film will hit the big screen in all its glory, while audience members are invited to come in costume, enter a costume contest and, of course, sing along with all the famous songs.

The fun is all happening on Sunday, Oct. 16, but tickets are already on sale, so don’t delay too long. Adults are $19.99, seniors and students $15, and children $10. Check out www.ticketsnw.ca to buy, or call 604-521-5050.

 

MUSICAL AUDITIONS SET

Here’s another tidbit from Royal City Musical Theatre – auditions are coming up for the company’s spring 2017 production of Anything Goes.

Director Valerie Easton and music director James Bryson will be auditioning for all roles on Sept. 17, 18, 24 and 25, with callbacks set for Oct. 1 and 2. Performers must attend a private singing audition and a dance call.

FIRST SATURDAY OPEN STUDIOS

Art lovers, if you haven’t checked out 100 Braid Street Studios yet, be sure to set aside time on Saturday, Sept. 3.The studio’s doors are open from noon to 5 p.m. for its First Saturday Open Studios event. Visitors can drop in and see artists in their workspaces, ask questions, check out art and take a tour of the unique art studio located in a former winery.
