The Beladeans are bringing their brand of "soul-shakin' riff-rock" to the stage at the Heritage Grill this weekend.

The band is onstage Saturday, May 10 from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The free, all-ages show will feature three sets.

"This will be our last show in the Royal City for a long time, so we hope to see a lot of you folks there," the band wrote in an email to The Record.

The band is promising an entertaining night.

"When The Beladeans play, people MOVE, dance, rock out, mosh, what have you, but nobody stands still," their website declares.

The band describes its sound as a modern-vintage blend of Northwest garage rock with the raw soul grooves of greats like Ike Turner and the Staks Records lineup.

"Influences include 50s rock'n'roll, early 60s soul, The Rockford Files, blues players on the back porch and sassy smokey clubs," the band explains on its site.

The Heritage Grill is at 447 Columbia St., downtown.

Check out www.thebeladeans.com for more about the band.

And check out the Heritage Grill's website, www.theheritagegrill.com, for more on its seven-day-a-week music lineup.

And while we're on the subject of the Heritage Grill and music, don't forget that the restaurant plays host to the Royal City Literary Arts Society's Songwriters Open Mike night every Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Enrico Renz and Lawren Nemeth host the gatherings in the backroom, and they invite all songwriters to "Write it! Bring it! Sing it!", as their motto says.

The venue occasionally changes, so anyone interested in stopping by is asked to check out Facebook to find out where it is that particular week.

Search "RCLAS New Westminster Songwriter Open Mic" to find them.

Musicians may also want to check out the open mike nights at Blenz Coffee uptown.

Singer-guitarist Jeff Neufeld is hosting the regular Wednesday evening open mike nights until at least the end of May. (They may run beyond that if they prove popular, so be sure to get out to support local performers!)

The evenings run from 7 to 9 p.m., with Jeff offering up an introductory set, and open mike performers starting about 7:35 p.m.

Performers can sign up ahead on Facebook, and the nights are open to people of all ages from 10 and up - special spots are reserved for 10- to 15-year-old performers.

Check out the link at www.jeffneufeldmusic.com for more details.

Blenz Coffee is at Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street.

Don't worry, fiction writers, you get your chance at an open mike night too.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society also holds regular short story open mike nights in the back room at the Heritage Grill.

Writers are invited to share short stories, essays or excerpts from books or journals. Storytellers are also welcome.

Deborah Kelly is guest hosting the May gathering on Wednesday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m.

In June, the event will move to Renaissance Books, with Margo Prentice hosting. Watch for more details.

And yes, of course, we won't forget the poets either!

Poetic Justice sessions - which include readings by featured poets, plus an open mike - run Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Heritage Grill's backroom. Check out www.poeticjustice.ca for a full schedule and details.

And, for those  who may be interested in a study group, don't forget about The Poetry Wars, with Carol Shillibeer.

The next session of the monthly study group is on Saturday, May 187 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the back room at the Heritage Grill.

Is tap dance an old-fashioned art form?

No way - not for the members of the West Coast Tap Dance Collective.

The collective is holding its annual Tap Day celebration on May 24 at Massey Theatre.

All That Tap takes to the stage at 7:30 p.m., featuring 150 dancers from around the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

"This year we are honouring Peggy Peat, a wonderful dance teacher who has touched the lives of so many," the group wrote in an email to The Record.

Among the performers will be alumnae from the Peggy Peat School of Dance.

Guest artists include Jennifer Bishop, Joel Hanna, Jim Hibbard, Lisa LaTouche, Troy McLaughlin, Susan Nase, Paula Skimin, Lindsay Sterk, Dayna Szyndrowski and Barbara Vargas.

The evening will be MC'd by Jeff Hyslop.

Tickets are $25 general, or $20 for members of the West Coast Tap Dance Collective.

Call the Massey Theatre at 604-521-5050 or buy through www.masseytheatre.com.

Check out www.westcoasttapdance.com or www.facebook.com/westcoasttap for more details.
