Music lovers, don’t forget that the West Coast Symphony is coming to town in October.

The orchestra is performing as part of the Music at Queens concert series on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Queens Avenue United Church, 529 Queens Ave.

Rebecca Wenham, principal cellist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, is joining the symphony as soloist for the Schumann Cello Concerto.

Also on the program are Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Symphony No. 5.

The orchestra will be led by conductor Bujar Llapaj.

The local concert is at 7:30 p.m., with admission by donation at the door.

If you can’t make it out to the New West date, the orchestra is performing the same concert on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard St.

BARE BEAR BONES

A New Westminster actor is starring in the upcoming Stage 43 Theatrical Society production of Bare Bear Bones.

The play opens on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.

New Westminster’s Ray Boulay and Burnaby’s Alexandra wilson star as empty nesters Norman and Ruth, who return to the Bear Bones Campground – a place they remember from years past – in an effort to reignite the spark in their marriage. Unbeknownst to them, their family getaway has become an “alternative lifestyle” campground (the show description contains a warning of “simulated nudity”).

Bare Bear Bones is on at the Evergreen, 1205 Pinetree Way in Coquitlam, Oct. 13 to 15 at 8 p.m., Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 19 to 22 at 8 p.m. Opening night on Oct. 13 features a reception after the show with offerings from The Saint St. Grill and Blue Heron Fruit Winery.

Check out www.stage43.org/tickets to buy yours.

As an added incentive, the show is partnering with Mossom Creek Hatchery and Education Centre (www.mossomcreek.org), and a portion of each ticket sold will be donated to the centre.

UPTOWN UNPLUGGED

If you’ve been loving the live music in uptown New West all summer, you’re in luck: it’s not over yet.

The Arts Council of New Westminster is continuing its Uptown Unplugged music series, with performers out and about in uptown New West on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.

This weekend, you can enjoy the talents of multi-instrumentalist Timothy Lambert on Saturday, Oct. 1, and solo guitarist Masa Ichigo on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Next weekend, it's father-daughter guitar duo Roland and Emma Nipp on Saturday, Oct. 8, with guitarist Daniel Sebastian-Cheung on Sunday.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, you can hear Nathen Aswell, a singer and player of the NS Stick – which, a release informs me, is “an eight-stringed electronic instrument that can be plucked like a bass, strummed like a guitar or tapped with both hands like a piano.”

On Sunday, Oct. 16, singer Margenne Mangaoang is scheduled to perform.

October is the last month of the Uptown Unplugged season. Check out www.acnw.ca for all the arts council goings-on.
