The academy, for performers aged 12 to 18, is a master-class experience that will focus on the skills development of each performer, with vocal and acting coaching and dance lessons. Performers will also learn more about audition techniques.

It will be taught by a team of professionals led by Valerie Easton, artistic director of Royal City Musical Theatre.

The camp runs 1 to 6 p.m. daily at the Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. The camp costs $300, plus tax.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST COMING

Calling all photographers: If you have wonderful images of the natural beauty of our city, you’ll want to take note of this contest.

The city has issued a call for submissions to its Naturally New West photography contest. The contest opens July 1 and closes on Aug. 31 at 4 p.m.

“We welcome images of nature, play in nature, or any Naturally New West program. Preference is given to images that reflect the natural beauty of the City of New Westminster,” the call for submissions says.

Selected works will be featured on four digital city billboards in the city.

The contest is open to new, emerging and professional artists, as well as members of the New West community. There’s no age or submission limit, but those entering must live or work in New Westminster.

Entries will be shortlisted by a jury panel, and five shortlisted submissions will be put to an online community vote. The winning selection will be displayed on the city’s electronic billboards for one month.

Note that you can’t start to enter the contest until July 1 – entries sent in ahead of time won’t be accepted. Your entries can be shared on Facebook or Twitter or emailed in to [email protected]. For all the rules, check out www.tinyurl.com/NWPhotoContest2017.

FIND YOUR FUNNY

Want to make ’em laugh? The Royal City Literary Arts Society is offering a workshop on Saturday, July 8 called Punching Up Your Comedy Writing, with facilitator Janice Bannister.

It's happening at the Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St., from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Bannister teaches stand-up comedy through her comedy school Laughter Zone 101 and for the SFU 55-plus liberal arts program.

A write-up about the class explains that she works on the philosophy that there are no rules in comedy, but there is structure.

“By adding good comedy structure to your stories, laughs can be generated,” the write-up explains. “In this workshop, you will work on how to make your characters funnier, your locations weirder and your reveals more entertaining.”

Writers are free to bring stories, scripts or screenplays that they are working on.

The workshop costs $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Register by email, [email protected], or see www.rclas.com/workshops for more.
