Love art? Love history?

Then you’ll want to check out the next exhibition at the Anvil Centre Community Art Space.

The Art of History runs May 25 to July 24, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 28.

The exhibition features the work of four New West artists – Gillian Wright, Angie Au Hemphill, Katherine Freund-Hainsworth and Peri-Lane Nilan – all known for their individual history-related artwork and their heritage homes drawings in the New Westminster Heritage Homes Tour booklets.

This exhibition brings the four together for the first time, exploring the city’s past through painting, drawing and mixed-media works.

Freund-Hainsworth will also lead a two-part hands-on workshop that will show participants how to combine mixed-media art with historical subject matter. It includes hands-on time, plus a gallery tour, archive visit and art supplies. It takes place on two Saturdays, June 6 and 20, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Anvil Centre.

The art of burlesque is coming to New West.

The Damask Burlesk Troupe is bringing its Spectacular Cabaret to the Columbia Theatre on Friday, May 22.

“Vancouver is home to one of the biggest hotbeds of the international rebirth of burlesque, but very few shows venture past Boundary Road,” a press release notes. “Spectacular Cabaret will bring elegance and grace laced with sass, combining everything from the rhinestone-dripping classic striptease of Diamond Minx to the side-splitting humour of the scenery-chewing and terribly verklempt Whashername.”

You can also expect to enjoy performances from Viv Cliquot, Ariel Helvetica and Mr. Yoyothrower.

“It will be a dynamic show that is sure to stun with its dazzling costumes, choreography and sensational performers, embodying the glory of cabaret,” the release says.

Columbia Theatre is at 530 Columbia St. Tickets are $24 regular or $34 for VIP seating. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show is at 9 p.m. Note: it’s for ages 19 and up only.

What do you do if you’re an actor who hates Hamlet?

The White Rock Players’ Club is asking that question in its next production – and a New Westminster actor is part of the comedic fun.

New West’s Colleen Byberg appears as Felicia Dantine in the upcoming production of I Hate Hamlet, taking to the stage at White Rock’s Coast Capital Playhouse from June 3 to 20.

Paul Rudnick’s comedy follows the story of a young and successful television actor who relocates to New York and, with his television career in limbo, gets offered a chance to play Hamlet. The catch? He hates Hamlet.

“Balance that with his enthusiastic real estate agent, his ever-supportive talent agents, a problematic girlfriend and a spectral visitor, and comedy ensues,” says a synopsis.

The play is directed by Dale Kelly and also stars Matt Loop, John Cousins, Sheila Keating, Pat McDermott and Rebekah MacEwan.

Evening performances are at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on June 7 and 14. The Coast Capital Playhouse is at 1532 Johnston Rd., White Rock.

Tickets are $18 regular, $16 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at 604-536-7535 or through www.whiterockplayers.com.
