We may be halfway through summer, but New Westminster isn’t letting up on the entertaining things to do in the city.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, grab a blanket and head to Port Royal Park for a free movie under the stars, as part of the city’s Culture Crawl. At 7 p.m., the park will be showing Steven Spielberg’s Hook, starring gutbusting funnyman Robin Williams as Peter Pan opposite Academy Award-winning Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman as the villainous Captain Hook.

A popcorn concession will be available, and before the movie, organizers will get the crowd involved in a “fun and funky community art project that will bring out the inner artist in us all!”

Get down to the Union, Jack!

Some of the region's top cover and tribute acts are heading to the Union Jack Public House this month.

This Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8 and 9, Jane's Blonde will be hitting the pub's stage with the sextet's eclectic mix of classic rock and modern pop. The band's live set often includes songs by such groups and artists as Journey, The Rolling Stones and Keith Urban.

Other bands hitting the cozy pub, located at 525 7th St., are Beatles tribute band The Day Trippers (Aug. 15), Phoenix Rising (Aug. 16), Jinx (Aug. 22 and 23) and Luv Shak (Aug. 29 and 30). For more details, check unionjackpublichouse.com.

Creative Writing on a hard deadline

If you have writer’s block, a 10-minute creative writing cram session may not help – or, it may inspire you to write like you’ve never written before.

Fran Bourassa hosts Creative Writing for the Faint of Heart, a workshop at the New West Public Library (716 Sixth Ave.) on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Attendees will be given 10-minute prompts to write something – anything – and then read it out loud.

“With short time limits and evocative prompts, this process bypasses the ‘editor’ in us,” reads an email about the event. “Each prompt lets the writer go deeper and take risks.

“Writing this way generates ideas. It removes blocks and inhibitions. Getting words out, getting them down on paper, sharing memories and feelings with others, making people laugh or making something beautiful out of pain – these things are life enhancing, life affirming and foster empathy and compassion.”

Just like the style of writing, admission is free. The workshop runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
