The popular International Guitar Night tour is returning to the Massey Theatre in the new year.
International Guitar Night is set to take to the stage on Saturday, Jan. 20 to highlight “the dexterity and diversity of acoustic guitar,” as a press release says.
This year’s edition of the worldwide touring show – the 19th year it’s been on the road - is hosted by Lulo Reinhardt, the legendary gypsy jazz guitar player.
Reinhardt will be joined by three new musicians for the occasion: Calum Graham, Marek Pasieczny and Michael Chapdelaine.
Graham is a 24-year-old Alberta-based guitarist and singer-songwriter who has already released five acclaimed albums, won major national music competitions, performed at the Olympic Games in London and Vancouver and who was recently named by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as one of the world’s Top 30 Guitarists Under 30. He recently introduced his fifth studio album, Tabula Rasa, with world-renowned acoustic guitarist Antoine Dufour.
Pasieczny, who hails from Poland, is a composer, guitarist, lecturer and adjudicator who has appeared at festivals in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Premieres of his works have been performed at such prestigious venues as Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2012, he was featured on the cover of Classical Guitar Magazine.
Chapdelaine, an American guitarist, is the only guitarist to ever win first prize in the world’s top competitions in both the classical and fingerstyle genres. He has performed around the world, using both steel string and classical guitars and covering styles that range from blues to Bach to country and R&B. He is currently a professor of music and head of guitar studies at the University of New Mexico.
Each of the four guitarists will play solo and then team up for duets and quartets.
The show is onstage at 7:30 p.m. It costs $35 regular, $25 for students and seniors, or $15 for children under 12. Tickets are now on sale. Buy through www.ticketsnw.ca.
