Do you have a story to tell?

Way Off-Broadway Wednesdays, the fringe performance series that makes its home at the Heritage Grill, is looking for storytellers to take part in the first-ever New West Story Slam on March 20.

Anyone is invited to enter a draw for a spot, and seven storytellers will be selected by lottery. On March 20, those seven will step up to the mic with an original story and compete for cash, gift certificates and prizes – decided by audience vote.

Competing storytellers will be selected by lottery on March 1. To get your name into the draw, let Way Off-Broadway know by 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 online: via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@wayoffwed) or email [email protected].

Stories must be original, four to six minutes long. All styles, both fiction and non-fiction, are welcome, and stories may be read aloud or memorized. (See complete rules at www.tinyurl.com/NWStorySlamRules.)

A press release about the event notes that the New West Story Slam is based on the format of the long-running Vancouver Story Slam, run by Susan Cormier and her team. Find out more about that event at www.facebook.com/VancouverStorySlam.

The New West Story Slam series is planned to continue all spring on the third Wednesday of every month, so you’ll have more chances to take part if you miss out on this one.

For audience members, a $5 entry fee will get you a ballot to select your favourites. Showtime is 7 p.m., and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage Grill, 447 Columbia St. Reservations are recommended at 604-759-0819.
