Love the written word?
The Royal City Literary Arts Society is launching a new season of programs and workshops, and there are a couple of September events to interest writers and word-lovers in the city.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, the Tellers of Short Tales series resumes, with a session from 6 to 8 p.m. The series is designed to connect lovers of the short story genres with other writers and readers. Each session includes a featured author and an open mic. The featured author for this session is Lydia Kwa, who has published two books of poetry and four novels.
It’s taking place in Room 413A at the Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St., and admission is free.
Then, on Saturday, Sept. 21, writers are invited to take part in a workshop called Exploring Truth in Creative Non-Fiction.
It’s led by Christina Myers, a former Record and Burnaby NOW reporter who’s an alumnus of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University. She’s now a freelance writer and editor, with a novel forthcoming next year from Caitlin Press.
In her workshop, she’ll look at creative non-fiction as a genre and discuss the various types of writing that fall under the heading. She’ll look at the constraints and challenges of creative non-fiction and the responsibilities of the writer in presenting “truth” in a creative way.
The workshop will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 417 at the Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St. It’s $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Pre-register by emailing [email protected].
