The Vagabond Players are closing out their season with a classic British farce.
The theatre company is presenting Charley’s Aunt, onstage June 1 to 25 at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park.
The comedy by Brandon Thomas first hit the stage in 1892, when it ran for 1,466 performances.
It tells the tale of Charley, whose rich aunt, Donna Lucia, is visiting from Brazil. Her presence as a chaperone will allow Charley and his friend, Jack, to ask their respective true loves, Amy and Kitty, for their hands in marriage.
But when Donna Lucia’s visit is delayed, the two young men force their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberley, to pose as Donna Lucia. Then Jack’s newly impoverished father arrives, along with the girls’ greedy guardian, and the fake Donna Lucia becomes the most popular widow in town – until, of course, Charley’s real aunt arrives.
The chaos is brought to life by a cast that stars Kyle Wipp as Babberley, Adam Timler as Charley and Alex Ross as Jack, with Ashley Chodat and Elizabeth Drummond as Amy and Kitty.
The real aunt is played by Isabel Mendenhall, and Ryan Johnson takes the role of Amy’s lovelorn guardian. Also in the cast are Richard Wiens, Roger Monk and Valeria Ascolese.
Tickets are $17, or $15 for seniors and youth, with $12 previews on June 1 and 2. Buy at www.vagabondplayers.ca/tickets or call 604-521-0412.
