New Westminster is full of drama – in the best possible way.

Students from all over the province are descending on the city for the Sears British Columbia Drama Festival, running April 28 to May 1 at Douglas College.

Over the past few months, more than 1,000 students and teachers from about 50 secondary schools throughout B.C. have participated in zone festivals; now, the outstanding productions from each zone are coming together for the festival.

Students have a chance to take part in workshops on a variety of drama-related topics, including on-camera auditioning, Shakespearean acting, improv comedy, creative characters, stage combat, makeup and more.

They will also bring their productions to the stage in an evening showcase, receiving expert adjudication from award-winning actor Allan Morgan – renowned for his work with Bard on the Beach.

Everyone is invited to take in the performances at the evening showcases, which are on nightly at 6:30 p.m. in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre, fourth floor north at 700 Royal Ave. Tickets are $10, available at the door (cash only).
