An icon and an inventor: Bombshell explores the hidden life of Hedy Lamarr

Film screens Nov. 27 in Last Mondays at the Movies series at Massey Theatre
Hedy Lamarr
The life of film icon Hedy Lamarr is explored in Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, screening in New West as part of the Last Mondays at the Movies series.

She was a Hollywood legend and one of the top leading ladies of the 1940s.

But behind the bombshell image lay a much deeper story – and it’s that story that’s coming to life in the next Last Mondays at the Movies screening. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story is on at Massey Theatre on Monday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

The movie brings to life a lesser-known side of Lamarr: the technological trailblazer and inventor.

“She was an Austrian Jewish émigré who invented a covert communication system to try and help defeat the Nazis, then gave her patent to the Navy, but was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead,” a press release about the film says. “It was only towards the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered her concept, which is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.”

Intrigued? The movie promises to explore her story using intimate reflections from her children, her closest friends, her family and her admirers.

Tickets are $9, or $8 for seniors and students. You can buy ahead at www.ticketsnw.ca or at the door (cash only). See www.artscouncilnewwest.org for more details.
