Safety alert: Canada-wide recall of vacuum cleaners due to 'fire hazard'

Check your vacuums.

Health Canada warns that a type of multi-surface vacuum cleaner is being recalled because it poses a fire hazard.

A safety notification issued Thursday (Jan. 12) states that the Bissel Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum poses a fire hazard because the circuit board inside the vacuum’s battery pack can overheat and smoke.

In Canada, the company said it has received six reports of a burning smell or smoke with no reports of injuries as of Dec. 30. In the United States, it has received three reports of the battery catching fire, with one report of an injury.

The company has also received 55 reports outside of Canada of burning smells or smoke.

The affected products can be identified by model number 2551, which is visible when the clean water tank is removed. It also has the UPC number 011120247633.

The word "BISSELL" is printed on the foot of the product, too.

The company sold 4,227 units of the affected product in Canada and 60,503 in the United States.
