Youth festival returns to city

Good for Grapes and Jordan Klassen will be headlining the Momentum Youth Arts Festival concert on Nov. 15.

Momentum Youth Arts Festival – formerly known as YamJam – aims to be a place that celebrates and promotes youth artists by giving them a chance to display and perform their arts. This year’s festival takes place from Nov. 10 to 21.

An interactive art gallery will be offered in the Plaskett Gallery at 735 Eighth Ave. from Nov. 10 to 21 between noon and 2 p.m. and 3 and 6 p.m., as well as during Momentum events at Massey Theatre.

The headlining concert – where Goods for Grapes and Jordan Klassen will take to the Massey Theatre stage – takes place on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The concert will also feature a showcase of youth musicians from the Connect mentorship program, This Side of Town and Alluvium.

Tickets for the concert are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. They’re available at www.ticketsnw.ca.

On Nov. 16, a numberof events are taking place as part of Momentum Youth Arts Festival including a Massey Theatre tour (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.), a poetry workshop, an African drumming workshop and an introduction to swing dancing.

Youth interested in careers in the arts won’t want to miss the “art focused post secondary night” on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Representatives from a variety of post-secondary institutions will provide information about arts-focused careers and courses.

On Nov. 20, the Momentum festival features Improv against Humanity, where local high-school improvers will join The Fictionals on stage for a night of comedy. Tickets are $5.

The Fictionals Comedy Co. is leading a free improv workshop on Friday, Nov. 21. Signup is required.

Explore military history

The New Westminster Historical Society is shining a light on military anniversaries at this month’s presentation.

The presentation is being held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. The topic of this year’s event – Of Military Anniversaries: Lest We Forget – will present some of the images of a 1994 award-winning cable TV program that was filmed in England and France at sites from the Second World War to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D-Day.

Archie Miller, one of the principals of the award-wining Lest We Forget, Canadians in Normandy, will share some personal anecdotes related to the on-location shooting of the documentary. The production included visits to Normandy beaches, Canadian War Graves cemeteries, commemorative Canadian markers in the countryside and more.

The program is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
