You don't need a tree to have fun with firefighters

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society invites Royal City residents to drop by its annual tree-chipping event, even if they don't have a tree.

The society's annual fundraiser is taking place on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Canada Games Pool parking lot. The event includes a hotdog barbecue, popcorn, live music and more.

"We are going to do the fire extinguisher demonstrations, weather permitting," society president Glen Bailey said about the demonstrations that show just how quickly a dried-out Christmas tree goes up in flames.

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society donates funds to a variety of local programs including the pediat-ric ward at Royal Columbian Hospital and food programs at schools.

"Everything is going to the charitable society. Everything is by donation," Bailey said. "No donation is too small, no donation is too big."

The charitable society invites all residents to drop by and check out the fire extinguisher demonstrations, have a hotdog and say hello, Bailey said.

"It's more than tree chipping," he said. "It's an event. It should be fun."
