Hazelridge, Manitoba proudly declares itself the Perogy Capital of Canada. Glendon, Alberta boasts the World’s Largest Perogy in the form of a roadside statue. But we’re here to give notice that New West is making inroads on these Prairie hotspots, and we’re declaring 2016 the Year of the Perogy.
Seriously, people, it’s like an outbreak of these delightful little potato-filled balls of dough everywhere you turn in this town. What with Solodko Ukrainian Bakery on Sixth Street, the Russian Spoon in the food court at Royal City Centre, Iwona Pierogies on 20th Street and, of course, the perennially popular perogy suppers and sales at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, this delightful Eastern European staple has made inroads into the kitchens of folks of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.
Whether you call them perogies, pyrohy, varenyky or just plain delicious, it’s clear this is one traditional food delight that’s here to stay. Bring ’em on, we say. With extra sour cream, please.
