What’s up in the city? Our top weekend picks

With the temperature dropping, it’s a great time to check out some of the indoor offerings in the Royal City. We’re continuing with our popular feature, The Record ’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are our suggestions for the Nov.

With the temperature dropping, it’s a great time to check out some of the indoor offerings in the Royal City. We’re continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are our suggestions for the Nov. 22 to 24 weekend.

1.  Be part of a live recording,when The Mojo Stars and special guests take to the stage at the Columbia Theatre on Friday, Nov. 22. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show gets underway at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at www.thecolumbia.ca or at 604-522-4500.

2.Relive your childhood and meet up with the Vancouver Yo-Yo club, which meets every Saturday at River Market. Community members are invited to bring their yo-gos and learn some new tricks. The gatherings take place every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. under the escalators at River Market, 810 Quayside Dr.

3.   Meet mystery writers Colleen Cross and Elizabeth Elwood, who are holding a special Murder, Mayhem and Mistletoe reading at Renaissance Books on Sunday, Nov. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 43 Sixth St. In addition to readings by the two authors, the event includes carols, and Christmas fun – including an open mike session where you can read your own holiday poems and stories.

4.  Drop by New Westminster Public Library and check out the Celebrating the Art of Our Veterans’ exhibition, which is now on display in the ramp gallery. The exhibition featuring works from the Artworks Studio at George Derby Centre in Burnaby, while the upstairs gallery has an exhibition by the New Westminster Photography Club. Both exhibits run until Nov. 30 at 716 Sixth Ave.

5.  Join the conversation at the Skeptics Brunch in New Westminster on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Met Bar and Grill, 411 Columbia St. Attendees of the brunch that happens on the fourth Sunday of the month are pro-science, humanists, skeptics, atheists and ex-religious.
