International and local offerings are part of the fun this weekend in New Westminster. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for March 7 to 9.

1.  Celebrate International Women’s Day – and support local businesses at the same time. With International Women’s Day being celebrated on March 8, some downtown businesses have decided to offer some specials for women. Deals are being offered by a range of businesses, including movies, flowers, massages and acupuncture, as well as retail sales. One local business is even offering a free glass of wine for women on Saturday. Full details are available at www.downtownnewwest.ca.

2.  Check out The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde, a production being put on by the theatre and stagecraft and event technology departments at Douglas College. Tickets are $10 to $12 and can be purchased at the door (as available) or in advance from Massey Theatre at www.masseytheatre.com or 604-521-5050. Saturday’s show times include a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening show at 7 p.m. The production is taking place in the Douglas College Studio Theatre, Room 4100 on the fourth floor of the college’s New Westminster campus at 700 Royal Ave.

3.  Help out a local preschool by attending the Queen’s Park Preschool Society’s silent auction on Saturday, March 8 from 7 to 11 p.m. The event, being held at River Market at 810 Quayside Dr., is the society’s main fundraising event.

4.  Support the dreams of girls in Africa who want to attend secondary school by attending the Canadian Harambee Education Society’s International Women’s Day fundraiser. The event features musical entertainment, a silent auction and refreshments, as well as a display about the society’s projects. The fundraiser takes place on Saturday, March 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall at 318 Keary St. Tickets are $20 and available at the door or by calling 778-566-5261.

5.  Drop by the Amelia Douglas Gallery and check out the paintings, ceramics and digital works by P. Thomas Wood. The Art as Therapy exhibit runs until April 11 in the gallery. You’ll find it on the fourth floor of Douglas College’s New Westminster campus at 700 Royal Ave. The Amelia Douglas Gallery is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For more information about the gallery, see www.douglas.bc.ca.
