Welcome spring by taking in some of the great events being offered around town. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend, with the following suggestions for March 21 to 23:

1.  Swing on over to Sapperton on Friday night and enjoy a night of dancing. Royal City Swing’s Friday night dance runs from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at the Sapperton Pensioners’ Hall, 318 Keary St. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., a beginner’s lesson runs from about 7:45 to 8:30 p.m., and then the floor opens up for dancing till midnight. The cover charge is $8, or $5 for seniors and students with valid ID. For more details visit Royal City Swing Friday Night Dance! page on Facebook.

2.  Expand your mind at the Mad About Science event taking place at Fraser River Discovery Centre on Saturday, March 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. The family-friendly event features hands-on experiments, educational activities and a show by internationally recognized science educators Mad Science. Admission to Mad About Science activities and exhibits is by donation but doesn’t include entry to Mad Science’s Fire and Ice show. To get tickets for the show taking place at 2 p.m. ($7 for one adult and one child, plus $5 for each additional child), call Fraser River Discovery Centre at 604-521-8401 or drop by 788 Quayside Dr.

3.  Enjoy a St. Patrick’s pancake breakfast – so what if it’s a few days late – at St. Barnabas Church hall. The New Westminster Lions Club is holding the event on Saturday, March 22 from 8 to 11 a.m. at 1010 Fifth Ave. Breakfast is by donation.

4.  Tune into Just Duets, featuring Andrea Smith and Dave Lidstone. With a repertoire that includes songs in a variety of genres that reflect a commitment to social justice, Canadian roots and poetry in song, they’re set to play at Renaissance Books on Saturday, March 22 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., 43 Sixth St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more info, call 604-525-4566 or email
[email protected].

5.  Get together with some of your friends or neighbours and brainstorm an event you’d like to hold. The Vancouver Foundation is once again making neighbourhood small grants (ranging from $50 to $500) available in New Westminster. The 2014 application deadline is Monday, April 7 at 5 p.m.  For more information about the grants, contact program coordinator Maylen Crespo at [email protected] or 604-525-9144, extension 3667.
