What's up in New West? Top Five weekend ideas for Feb. 21 to 23

Whether you’re in the mood to shop, to enjoy some clever conversation or to get moving, we’ve got some ideas for you for this weekend.

Treasure hunting: St. Barnabas Church is selling off surplus donations to raise money for the Ash Street apartment fire relief fund. A volunteer recently helped sort through the donations that flooded into local churches to help victims of the Jan. 31 fire.

Whether you’re in the mood to shop, to enjoy some clever conversation or to get moving, we’ve got some ideas for you for this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top 5 (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Feb. 21 to 23.

1.  Find some bargains and help support victims of the recent apartment fire on Ash Street. Due to the overwhelming community response, local organizations are holding a sale of surplus donations on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Barnabas Church Hall at 1010 Fifth Ave. People are asked to bring a recycling bag – and fill it up for $2. Hotdogs, coffee and hot chocolate will also be sold at the event. All proceeds will go into a trust fund that’s been established to help fire victims.

2.  Check out the unique and vintage finds at the Curious Flea, which returns to River Market on Saturday and Sunday. Vendors will be selling an eclectic mix of goods, including antiques, mid-century modern and kitschy décor, upcycled furniture and more. Curious Flea runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at 810 Quayside Dr.

3.  Support the dreams of young performers in music, theatre and dance at the Backstage Youth Performers’ Society’s A Night of Stars. Being held at Massey Theatre, the show includes new and returning performers from past fundraisers. Tickets are $18.50 or $23 (including service charges). Make a night of it and attend the $20 pre-gala reception that features gourmet appetizers, desserts, wine, coffee and tea. 4.  Dive into some good times at the $1 family swim at Canada Games Pool. During the swim that runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, admission is only $1 for each family member. Canada Games Pool is located at 65 East Sixth Ave. For more information, call 604-526-4281

5.  Join the conversation at the Skeptics Brunch on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Met Bar and Grill. If hanging out and chatting with “pro-evidence, pro-science free thinkers” appeals to you, drop on by. 6.  Enjoy yourself at Poetic Justice, which features Manolis, Kyle McKillop, Lilija Valis and host Sonja Grgar. Poetic Justice takes place on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. at he Heritage Grill’s backroom, 447 Columbia St. For more information, visit www.poeticjustice.ca.
