If this week’s warmer weather has got you wanting to get out and about, you’ll like some of this week’s offerings in New West. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for May 2 to 4.

1.  Check out a new pastime at the New Westminster Lawn Bowling club’s 97th annual open house, where members will introduce newcomers to the game and provide basic instruction. The fun takes place on Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 710 Eighth St. (next to Century Place). There’s no need to dress in white, but people should avoid wearing shoes with heels. For information call 604-970-7664 or email [email protected].

2.  Explore the city with local residents during the Jane’s Walks that are taking place around New Westminster this weekend. Ten walks are taking place in New Westminster from May 2 to 4, including walks at Westminster Pier Park, downtown, Fraser and St. Peter’s cemeteries, South Dyke trail in Queensborough, Glenbrooke Ravine, the West End, as well as a SkyTrain walk and talk pub crawl. There’s no need to register – you just have to show up at the starting time and place and join in on the walks of your choice. Details about the walks are found on Jane’s Walk website at www.janeswalk.org and at the New Westminster Public Library.

3.  Join local families and students in the Hyacks in Motion three-kilometre run/walk in Queen’s Park on Saturday, May 3. The event is raising money to help promote physical health and literacy in youth in New Westminster and New Westminster Secondary School by increasing field trip opportunities in alternative health environments and access to physical health equipment and nutritious food at NWSS. Event registration takes place in the picnic shelter from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the run/walk gets underway at 10 a.m. For more information, go to www.hyacksinmotion.com or check out the Hyacks In Motion page on Facebook.

4.  Pick up some plants for your garden at the New Westminster Horticultural Society boulevard plant sale. It’s happening on Saturday, May 3 at 520 Fifth St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale runs rain or shine. Cash only.

5.  Drop by the New West Artists third annual exhibit, Art Squared, featuring one-foot square artworks, and its satellite show Music Framed, music made visual. An opening reception takes place on Friday, May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second floor of River Market at 810 Quayside Dr. You can check out the exhibit May 2 to 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 150 artworks by talented local artists will be on display for you to discover and enjoy.

6.  Spike and volley your way to fun at the free, drop-in beach volleyball action taking place at Westminster Pier Park on Sunday, May 4 from 9 to 11 a.m. While the courts are normally available on a first-come first-served basis, the city sets the courts aside on occasion for volleyball enthusiasts to enjoy some court time. If you miss today’s games, drop by on Monday, May 12 or Wednesday, May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.
