Travel show at the library, take an armchair tour along the road less travelled when Debbie Smith presents her travel photos of Turkmenistan, 7:30 p.m. Adjacent to the Caspian Sea, with Iran and Afghanistan as southern neighbours, Turkmenistan has a long and colourful history and was once part of the famous Silk Road. The travel shows are sponsored by the University Women's Club of New Westminster and held in the New Westminster Public Library auditorium at 716 Sixth Ave.

Rhyming Verse: The Joy, The Curse, a workshop in which Garry Ward examines the elements that distinguish great modern rhyming verse from Hallmark cards, including surprise, variation and musicality, 6:30 p.m. New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. Learn about this poetry art form at a workshop sponsored by the Royal City Literary Arts Society and the New Westminster Public Library. Jump start your heritage and genealogy research, at the drop-in clinics at the New Westminster Public Library, 3 to 6 p.m. Get personal assistance researching your New Westminster house or family. Librarians will be available to show you how to find information online and in print, including unique materials found only at the library. Historical photographs, newspaper articles, obituaries and funeral records are some of the resources available. The New Westminster Public Library is at 716 Sixth Ave. and is wheelchair accessible.

New Westminster Puffers Club Society meets at New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave., 12:30 to 2 p.m. Anyone with COPD or other breathing problems are welcome.

Codependents Anonymous, Freedom Group is a Twelve Step program for men and women who want healthier more functional relationships with themselves and others. Meetings are at 7:30 p.m. at Royal Columbian Hospital, 330 East Columbia St., Neil Russell Room, third floor of Columbia tower. Marjorie, Too Afraid to Cry: A Home Child Experience. Imagine being a child and traveling alone to live and work in a faraway country. Such was the fate of many children of the Home Child program of the British government. Thousands of poor and orphaned British children were sent to the colonies to provide cheap labour.  Patricia Skidmore tells the heartrending story of her mother as a Home Child on Vancouver Island in the 1930s in her recent book, Marjorie: Too Afraid to Cry. She will talk about the book and her mother's experiences at 7 p.m. at eh New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. Her slide presentation will include some of her mother’s mementoes that were saved over the years. NWSS Jazz Night at The Columbia, with guests GMS JazZ Band, Columbia Theatre, 530 Columbia St., 7 p.m. This supper club type evening will include door prizes and salsa dancing. Strengthening Families Together, free 10-week course for families with a loved one suffering from mental illness. Provides information, tools and support to cope with the challenges. HOMINUM is an informal discussion and support group to help gay, bi-sexual and questioning men with the challenges of being married, separated or single. New Westminster Tinnitus Support Group, meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, 7 p.m., Century House, 620 Eighth St., ABC Room. Tinnitus is a ringing, humming, buzzing or other sound in our head or ears that doesn't have an outside source. The group discusses the latest treatment information and coping and stress reduction techniques, and offers encouraged and camaraderie to help combat this debilitating condition.
