Music, commuity, food and fun - it's all being offered in New West this weekend. Here are the Record's top picks for Oct. 2 to 4.

1.  Head over to the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services’ 2015 open house on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Live demonstrations, equipment displays, a barbecue (by donation) by the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society, and a visit from Sparky the fire dog are among the day’s highlights. The fire hall is located at 1 East Sixth Ave., next to Canada Games Pool and Centennial Community Centre.

2.  Celebrate the anniversary of the Wait for Me Daddy photograph at a ceremony at Hyack Square on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. Wait for Me Daddy Redux, which features three special performances honouring the photograph with a contemporary spin, takes place at Anvil Centre’s theatre at 2 and 7 p.m. The show is free, but reservations are required at 604-527-4640. Anvil Centre is located at 777 Columbia St. Hyack Square is at the foot of Eighth Street, at Columbia.

3.  Join the conversation about how New West can become a dementia-friendly community. The city is having a community conversation on Saturday, Oct. 3 between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to raise awareness about dementia, share the results of a survey and get input into a dementia-friendly community action plan. It’s happening at Century House, 620 Eighth St. Doors open at 10 a.m. and light refreshments will be served.

4.  Laugh it up at Lafflines Comedy Club, when Ron Vaundry brings his “thinking man’s comedy” to town. Vaundry has performed at comedy festivals throughout the world, including the Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival in Montreal and the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in Scotland. This weekend he’ll be performing at Lafflines on Friday, Oct. 2 at 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Lafflines is located in the Columbia Theatre at 530 Columbia St. To beat the line, buy tickets online at lafflines.com or by calling 604-525-2262.

5.  Enjoy a night out at Great Pairings: Eyes on the Future, a show at the Massey theatre that incudes music, comedy, dance and theatre. Performing artists have been paired for unique collaborations. 6.  Savor the sounds of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) and Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at the Westcoast Symphony’s concert on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Queens Avenue United Church, 529 Queens Ave. Admission is by donation at the door.
