We’ve got a diverse lineup of events taking place in New west this weekend – and you won’t want to miss them. Here are the Record’s top picks for the May 29 to 31 weekend.
1. Check out Northwest Fan Fest, an event that caters to many interests, hobbies and fandoms including comics, anime, gaming and more. Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation, a costume contest and appearances by actors on Once Upon a Time are among the features of this event that’s taking place at Anvil Centre on May 29 to 31. 2. Tour some of New West’s finest heritage homes in the 36th annual New Westminster Heritage Homes Tour and Tea on Sunday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $40 (or $35 for heritage preservation society members) and are available at Cadeaux Gifts and Home Embellishments (467 East Columbia St.), Champagne Taste (1101 Royal Ave.), Royal City Colours (700 12th St.), New Westminster Museum and Archives (Anvil Centre – 777 Columbia St.) and Gardenworks (Mandeville and Lougheed locations).
3. Enjoy the Maple Leaf Singers’ tribute to happiness, freedom and the exuberance of life, when they bring their Touch the Sky show to the Massey Theatre stage on May 30 and 31. They’ll be serving up hits including Crocodile Rock, My Favourite Things, Happy, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and more. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. 4. Forget about cooking for a night and enjoy a tasty perogy dinner cooked by the folks at Holy Eucharist Church. The monthly dinner takes place on Friday, May 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 501 Fourth Ave. (at the corner of Fifth Street). You can dine in the hall or get yours to go. 5. Support FSH Muscular Dystrophy at the #Standup4FSHD comedy night at the Columbia Theatre on Saturday, May 30. Sixteen-year-old singer/pianist Ben Dunnill opens the show and will be followed by Jared Borland (a frequent headliner at Lafflines and host of Comedy on the Corner at The Corner in Vancouver) and American-Iranian comedian and host of MTV’s Disaster Date K-Von. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 available at www.thecolumbia.ca.
6. Get the kids to join Axé Capoeira for an interactive educational workshop that includes Brazilian percussion music, acrobatics and more. Sessions are taking place on Sunday, May 31 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. Artstarts: Art of Capoeira is a free 45-minute arts workshop for kids – no pre-registration required.
