1. Have a doggone good time at this year’s Doggy Fun Day, which includes free events for dogs and their people, including the dog/owner look-alike and bobbing for wieners contests. The event, which takes place on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Queen’s Park, includes contests, entertainment, raffles, vendors selling dog supplies and services, and more.
2. Throw some bowls at the Queen’s Park Healthcare Volunteer Society’s third annual Let’s Get Rolling! fundraiser at the New Westminster Lawn Bowling Club on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. No experience is necessary and lessons will be provided. The fundraiser includes a cash bar, raffles and door prizes. Tickets are $40 (proceeds going to programs at Queen’s Park Care Centre and Williams Rudd House) and are available at www.qphf.org or at the door (710 Eighth St. in Moody Park).
3. Head to Queen’s Park Stadium for the final show in this year’s Summer Movie Series – Inside Out. Pack some chairs or a blanket (and some snacks if you’d like) and check out this week’s free movie, which takes place at dusk on Friday, Aug. 26. There’s a concession on site. If the weather is iffy, call 604-515-3775 to confirm the movie is on.
4. Enjoy a night out at the Dan’s Legacy Community Dinner, which is raising money for a local charity that provides counselling services to youth survivors of trauma. Certified chef de cuisine Amber Anderson will prepare a yummy three-course meal at the fundraiser that also includes a silent auction, kids’ activities and entertainment. Tickets for the fundraiser are $25 per adult (free for kids under 12 with parents) and available online at www.danslegacy.com/communitydinner.php.
5. Get the kids moving at Jump, Bend, Sway, Twist, Shake!, a free ArtStarts workshop for kids and families at River Market on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There’s no need to register, but you might want to get there early as it’s popular.
