It’s going to be a soggy Thanksgiving weekend in New West, but there’s no reason to be bored. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Oct. 10 to 12.
1. Support the New Westminster Hyack football team at a fundraiser being held at Save-On-Foods in Royal City Centre. The event, being held on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes the NWSS mariachi band, an in-store barbecue (salad and a burger for $3) and a spinning wheel.
2. Drop in to River Market and check out the Pop-Up Library project, a free, all-ages book-sharing and art-making event. It’s taking place on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. Organizers have gathered 1,000 books for children, teens and adults and encourage folks to test their “have a book, leave a book, need a book, take a book” philosophy.
3. Head to one of the local watering holes and watch the opening weekend of NHL hockey. Whether you’re in Queensborough, Sapperton, uptown or downtown, you’re bound to have a favourite spot that will be showing a game. The Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.
4. Take in the Vagabond Players’ latest production, Murder By the Book, now on stage at Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park. The show runs Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 or $13 for seniors and students, and can be reserved by calling 604-521-0412 or emailing [email protected].
5. Peruse the candidates who will be seeking your vote in this year’s civic election. Once the nomination period closed at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, all nomination documents will be filed online for all to see. You’ll be able to see who’s in the hunt for your vote for mayor, councillor and school trustee on Nov. 15. You can find all the candidates – and information about how and when to vote – at www.newwestcity.ca.
