Celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend with some new events – and some old favourites. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record ’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for May 16 to 19. 1.

Celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend with some new events – and some old favourites. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for May 16 to 19.

1.  Drop by River Market for the Summer Preview Artisans’ Fair on Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. An eclectic mix of artisans will be featured at this weekend’s event, which takes place at 810 Quayside Dr. For more information, check out the Events section at www.

2.  Celebrate National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day at a barbecue on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Choices at the Crest (just across the border at 8683 10th Ave. in Burnaby.) The fundraiser includes a barbecue for $5 and a free presentation where you can learn how mental illness affects individuals, families and communities.

3.  Check out the efforts of local youth who have organized ecoFEST 2014, which will feature booths, carnival games, music and inspirational speakers who will share their success stories as youth environmental leaders or aspects of the environmental movement. The event is taking place on Saturday, May 17 from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the New Westminster boardwalk.

4.  Go back in time at the Hyack Antique Fair, which is taking place at the Queen’s Park Arenex on Sunday, May 18 and Monday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 604-522-6894.

5.  Bring some earplugs and celebrate a New Westminster tradition at the Hyack Anvil Battery’s annual salute to Queen Victoria, who named the Royal City.  The salute takes place on Monday, May 19 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Queen’s Park Stadium.
