While the weather is expected to cool down after a hot week in the Royal City, there’s still plenty of reasons to get out and have some fun this weekend.

While the weather is expected to cool down after a hot week in the Royal City, there’s still plenty of reasons to get out and have some fun this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for July 18 to 20.

1.  Get inspired at PechaKucha New West, which features presenters speaking on a variety of topics – each showing 20 images for 20 seconds. Volume 6 of PechaKucha heads outdoors to Westminster Pier Park on Saturday, July 19, where a “daytime dance party” featuring music by some of the Lower Mainland’s top electronic music DJs takes place from 4 to 9 p.m., and inspiring presentations will follow. 2.  Laugh it up for a good cause at the Stand Up for FSHD fundraiser, featuring comics Carter Hortie and Dino Archie. The Saturday, July 19 event is raising funds for FSHD muscular dystrophy research. Doors open at 6 p.m., music by Mixed Company begins at 6:30 p.m. and the show gets underway at 7 p.m. at The Columbia at 530 Columbia St. p.m. Tickets are $. 3.  Enjoy a family-friendly Shakespeare play with the Shadows and Dream’s Theatre Company’s production of Love’s Labour Lost. The five-part production begins on Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. on the bandshell stage in Queen’s Park.  Part 2 is on Saturday, July 26, Part 3 is on Sunday, July 27, Part 4 is on Saturday, Aug. 3, Part 5 is on Sunday, Aug. 3.

4.  Take a ride down the slide and beat the heat at Canada Games Pool. New Westminster’s much-loved pool facility is a great place to chill out (and get out of the sun if need be for a couple of hours.) For details about the facility located at 65 East Sixth Ave., visit www.newwestpcr.ca.

5.  Drop by St. Joseph Orthodox Church for its Middle Eastern Food Festival, which takes place on Sunday, July 20 from 12 to 9 p.m. at 1308 Ewen Ave. in Queensborough. Enjoy authentic Middle Eastern grilled food and delicious sweets, listen to music and learn how to play the hand drum "Tableh". The event also includes face painting and crafts for kids, raffles and church tours and presentations (2 and 6 p.m.) For more information call 778-387-8008.

6.  Check out The Drag Show, which has returned to the Heritage Grill on Columbia Street on Sunday, July 20. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. The event’s cover charge is $10. For more information, visit www.theheritagegrill.com.
