What's happening in New West? Top Five weekend ideas - July 11 to 13

Whether you’re into culture or community, there’s something for you this weekend – just be sure to slap on some sunscreen if you’re heading to one of the outdoor suggestions.
Show & Shine
Closing the door: The Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Area’s board of directors made a unanimous decision to pull the plug on the Show and Shine festival last year. Now the Hyack Festival Association has stepped forward to take over the event.

Whether you’re into culture or community, there’s something for you this weekend – just be sure to slap on some sunscreen if you’re heading to one of the outdoor suggestions.

We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for July 11 to 13.

1.  Grab a blanket or some folding chairs and head to Queen’s Park, where the free outdoor summer movie series gets underway on Friday, July 11. The series kicks off with the hit Disney movie Frozen, which is bound to have a few kids belting out the musical hits from the flick. The movie takes place in the Queen’s Park Stadium at dusk, but doors open at 7 p.m.

2.  Say goodbye to all that unwanted paperwork at the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society’s annual shred-athon. Not only can you have all your paperwork shredded on site (by donation) but you can also listen to some musical entertainment, enjoy a barbecue or munch on some popcorn. The shred-athon is taking place on Saturday, July 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canada Games Pool parking lot, 65 East Sixth Ave.

3.  Enjoy a meet and greet (with wine and cheese) as Candice James and Manolis have a double book launch of their latest works. Manolis will read from Autumn Leaves, and James will read from Purple Haze.Personalized books will be available for purchase at the book launch that’s taking place on Saturday, July 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Arts Council of New Westminster Gallery in Queen’s Park (inside Centennial Lodge).

4.  Motor on down to Columbia Street for this year’s KeyWest Ford Show and Shine. The free event features classic and custom vehicles, vintage and electric bikes, food vendors, beer gardens and live entertainment on Columbia Street. It’s taking place on Sunday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Columbia Street.

5.  Beat the heat and enjoy a dip in one of the city’s outdoor pools. Moody Park is home to the city’s newest outdoor pool, but Hume Park has a shallow pool and Grimston Park has the city’s only wading pool. For more information about the pools, visit the city’s parks and recreation website at www.newwest
pcr.ca.

6.  Soak up some summer vibes at the Queen’s Park bandshell, where The Land of Deborah takes to the stage this weekend. This award-winning singer, songwriter and composer will perform her one-woman acoustic show on Sunday, July 13 at 2 p.m.
