Queensborough Bike Rodeo

Active or passive, young or old, artsy or sporty – it’s all covered in this weekend’s happenings in New West. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend, for May 9 to 11.

1.  Hunt for dealsat the Queen’s Park Garage sale on Saturday, when more than 40 homes will be selling items and raising funds for Canuck Place children’s hospice. 2.  Brush up on bike safety– and have fun – at the Queensborough Bike Rodeo that takes place Saturday, May 10 starting at 1 p.m. at the Queensborough Community Centre. The rodeo includes a show by Trial Stars trick riders, a ride through area trails, safety instruction, bike decorating, a “tricked-out” tricycle race and skill-testing obstacle stations. Registration is $5 before the event or $8 on rodeo day and includes a barbecue lunch. For info, call 604-525-7388. The Queensborough Community Centre is at 920 Ewen Ave.

3.  Treat mom to a performance by the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, which is holding a Mother’s Day concert on Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Massey Theatre. The concert features up-and-coming cellist Tate Zawadiuk, and maestro Jin Zhang. Admission is by donation. Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave.

4.  Learn about your health the Boucher Naturopathic Medical Clinic open house that’s taking place on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the open house, visitors will have a chance to have free spinal assessments, blood pressure checks, blood glucose testing, blood typing and tongue and pulse diagnoses.The open house also includes 15-minute health consultations. 5.  Check out the impressive skills of New Westminster’s female lacrosse players, who will be taking part in the annual Dorothy Robertson Memorial Girls tournament this weekend. Salmonbellies players in the tyke, novice and peewee will be competing against teams from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in the tournament that takes place May 9 to 11 at Queen’s Park and Moody Park arenas.
