What's happening in New West? Top Five weekend ideas for June 20 to 22

Arts and culture – and plenty of fun – are featured in New West this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for June 20 to 22. 1.

Arts and culture – and plenty of fun – are featured in New West this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for June 20 to 22.

1.  Enjoy the Queensborough Children’s Festival at Megan’s Place in Ryall Park. The annual festival includes activities, games and entertainment for kids of all ages. Toddlers are invited to bring their teddy bears to a teddy bear picnic. This fun-filled event takes place on Sunday, June 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ryall Park, 920 Ewen Ave.

2.  Explore the world of Anne of Green Gables at a literary morning for boys and girls aged eight to 12. The event, taking place on Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Irving House, gives children a chance to explore the book and see what the kids who lived in Irving House had in common with Anne. During the event, participants will be able to try some child-friendly raspberry cordial, have an Edwardian tea, and make a scrapbook, rag rug and more to take home. The program costs $15.45. 3.  Treat yourself to the St. Joseph Middle Eastern Food Festival, where you can enjoy some tasty food, hear some Middle Eastern music, learn how to do some traditional dances and more. Cooking demonstrations, face painting, crafts and a church tour are all part of the festival fun. It’s happening on Friday, June 20 from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, June 21 from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 22 from noon to 5 p.m. at St. Joseph Orthodox Church, 13098 Ewen Ave. in Queensborough. 4.  Get into summer mode when Josie deBaat’s Polynesian Dancers take to the stage at the Queen’s Park bandshell. The free event takes place on Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. and is part of the city’s free concert series.

5.  Check out the Poetry Wars event, a study group where participants read poems, reviews, texts and commentary – all with the goal of being better poets. It’s taking place on Sunday, June 21 from 4 to 6 pm. at the Heritage Grill, Back Room, 447 Columbia St. For more information, email [email protected].
