Summer is in full swing in the Royal City, and there’s no shortage of fun things to do on this B.C. Day long weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for Aug. 1 to 4.
1. Bring back that loving feeling when Top Gun hits the big screen during the Summer Movie Series. This ’80s classic starring Tom Cruise is this week’s feature in the movie series that runs until the end of August in Queen’s Park Stadium. Bring a blanket or a chair, along with some snacks, and head to the stadium for a night of fun. The stadium doors open at 7 p.m., and the movies get underway at dusk – approximately 8:30 p.m. In case of poor weather, call 604-527-4634 to check on the status of the movie – but we don’t think that will be a problem this weekend.
2. Take a dip in one of the city’s outdoor pools. With warm weather continuing into the weekend, it’s a great time to cool off under sunny skies at the Moody Park Outdoor Pool or Hume Park Pool. Hume has a shallow pool, while Moody has a diving area, slide and toddler area. The pools are open from 1:15 to 7:55 p.m., and there’s no admission charge on weekends.
3. Check out Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, which is onstage at Douglas College this weekend. Coriolanus follows the journey of Roman general Caius Martius in his struggle for power during the early days of the Roman Republic. The production, presented by Drops of Salt Production, runs daily from Aug. 1 to 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas College Studio Theatre, 700 Royal Ave. Tickets are $8 and are available at the door.
4. Get your body moving at the Zumba class at River Market on Sunday from 9 to 10 a.m. May Elford leads this session, which is for people aged 14 and older with all fitness levels. The class is $5 and held in the community square at River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. Thirty spots are available by registering through Eventbrite or by drop-in if space is available.
5. Go for a walk on one of the city’s trails. While the waterfront esplanade and Westminster Pier Park are beautiful places on a summer day, you may enjoy a bit more shade on the trails of Queen’s Park or Glenbrook Ravine Park.
