Whether you’re looking to make your heritage home energy-efficient, get entertained or take part in some great community events, you won’t have to travel far this weekend. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for April 25 to 27.

1.  Learn how to make your heritage home more energy-efficient at the City of New Westminster’s 2014 Heritage Home Workshop, which will feature presentations and information booths. This interactive workshop includes presentations on maintaining and enhancing the heritage and character elements of older homes while improving their energy use through home upgrades. The free workshop takes place on Saturday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at city hall. To register, contact project coordinator Ryan Coleman at 604-515-3818 or [email protected].

2.  Help kick off LitFest New West with Double Exposure’s Bob Robertson and Linda Cullen. The comedy duo will be launching LitFest with a comedy retrospective and reception at the New Westminster Public Library on Friday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. The library is located at 716 Sixth Ave. To reserve a seat, call 604-527-4667.

3.  Get some writing inspiration at LitFest New West, which takes place Saturday, April 26 at Douglas College. The literary festival features writing workshops, poetry readings, a marketplace, book signings by authors and a literary showcase. For more information and to register for workshops, go to artscouncilnewwest.org/litfest.

4.  Make some progress on your spring cleaning  at this year’s Queensweep recycling event, where you can recycle items such as light bulbs, batteries, Styrofoam and electronics; sell items at a garage sale; shred (up to 100 pounds of sensitive documents); and donate items such as clothing, toys, dishes, towels and housewares. The event also features information booths and decluttering strategies, a barbecue, eco crafts, entertainment and a community cleanup of the Queensborough foreshore and pathways. It’s all happening at the Queensborough Community Centre, 920 Ewen Ave. on Sunday April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the community centre at 604-525-7388.

5.  Find some deals for the kids at the first Kids Swap Meet, which takes place at River Market on Sunday, April 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. In addition to being a place where you can make a few bucks by selling clothes, toys and equipment your kids no longer need, you can also support a local family that’s raising funds for their son’s autism therapy. The event is taking place on the second floor of River Market, 810 Quayside Dr.

6.  Support the Arokis Centre of Music Society and enjoy some music at the Big Band, Big Bang fundraiser. Impressions and Urbana bands will take to the stage at the Columbia Theatre on Sunday, April 27 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for Arokis Centre of Music Society, a non-profit organization under which the two bands operate. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and available at www.northerntickets.com/events/big-band-big-bang or at the Columbia Theatre at 530 Columbia St.
