Getting green: Volunteers took part in a recent evasive plant removal and planting of native trees event in Hume Park. Another Citizen Science event is taking place in Hume Park this weekend - just one of our Top Five Things to Do in New West.

The weather is forecast to be sunny and warm this weekend, so we highly recommend you get out and enjoy a walk in the city. We’ve got some other offerings happening around town – indoors and outside – for your weekend enjoyment. We are continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top 5 (or More) Things to Do and offer the following suggestions for April 11 to 13.

1.  Discover why the Langley Ukulele Ensemble is such a hit around town, when the group headlines the annual Music of the Night celebration at Century House. The event also includes a silent auction, coffee and tea at intermission and more. Tickets are $10 for Century House members and $12 for non-members. The event, a fundraiser for the Century House Association bursary fund, takes place on Friday, April 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at 620 Eighth St.

2.  Pick up some Ukrainian goodies just in time for Easter at Holy Eucharist Church’s Easter bake sale. The sale will feature traditional paskas, babkas, perogies, cabbage rolls, borscht, beet horseradish and more, as well as handmade pysanky from Ukraine. The sales takes place on Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 501 Fourth Ave. For more information, call 604-526-0988.

3.  Hop on down to Queensborough Community Centre for pet photos with the Easter bunny. The event includes free treats for pets and their humans and photos (with a suggested donation of $10 to the New Westminster Emergency Pet Services). The event is taking place on Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Queensborough Community Centre, 920 Ewen Ave.

4.  Support small local businesses, community organizations, groups and clubs that promote health and wellness for all ages at the spring Cleaning for Your Mind, Body and Soul Event. The free event includes demonstrations, a children’s activity zone, gift bags for the first 100 families, and a spring shave and raffle that are raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. It’s taking place on Sunday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. For more information, visit the Spring Cleaning for Your Mind, Body and Soul page on Facebook.

5.  Learn about local ecology at the Uncover Your Creeks: Citizen Science program taking place this weekend in lower Hume Park. The city and Evergreen have partnered to offer the two-year program, where volunteers help manage invasive plants, plant native plants and monitor the water quality in the Brunette River. The program runs from 10 a.m. to noon and participants can meet at the picnic shelter. Register for this all ages free event by contacting Sharon Johal at [email protected] or 604-689-0766 ext. 226.
